I use this video as part of a lesson in my High School Media Skills Class.  We talk about the different kinds of libraries and information needs that they solve.

putyourfaceinabook Northridge High School Library

Promoting and marketing a school library to the students staff and community can be quite a challenge.  This is my newest digital connection.  On our Northridge Media Knights Library FaceBook page, I update patrons on things that we do in our Library Media Skills class, library happenings, our book club activities, School District as well as community Library/Literacy related events.
Credit for this idea goes to a billboard for the Milwaukee Public Library.

Just some interesting information about the increased popularity about Dystopian Fiction.  Infographics are awesome!

Take a peek at the webpage I put together on our school website.  It's still a work in progress.

Happy Anniversary to Me!

About a year ago I decided to peruse our school district employment website.  I had created an employment profile account while still completing my School Library Media endorsement program.  School Library positions are very rare, and even more so if you do not have a secondary teaching license (to be in a secondary school)  I had neither at that point in time.

On the school district website I saw a school library media specialist position for Northridge High School-a mere 6 miles away from our home.  Hmmm.. it took me 2 seconds to "dare" myself.. "Do I dare apply?"  Eh.. why not?  I don't have anything to loose since I was still a stay-home mom.

I applied.

A week later they called me for an interview.

I interviewed at 9am, by 3pm on the same day I was offered the job.  I about fell over.. actually I think I did.. Good thing I was near our couch.

My face hurt from smiling so much, my brain went through spasms of belief and disbelief, and I kept muttering to myself "I can't believe it, I can't believe it!".  Then the horror of reality set in.

I've been a stay home mom for 14 yrs.. my babies!  Do I really want to go back to work?  This is my dream job.. a library!  Summers off, I get to buy thousands of dollars of books!  I will miss my family!  Babysitting?  Who will cook dinner?  When do I grocery shop?  Can I work and continue school?  Graduate school? Good Grief.. laundry on the weekends?

Then peace.. it will all come together.  It will all fall into place.  This is happening for a reason.  Why now?  Why at this time in your life? It was meant to be. A blessing.  Talents that are given are not to be wasted but nurtured and multiplied and this was my blessing and opportunity to make that happen.  I am now in a concurrent graduate program to become a licensed teacher and to obtain my M.Ed. in secondary education and teacher leadership in addition to working full time as a teacher librarian.  I will be completely done with my program in 1 year.

My family has been so supportive and flexible. My husband, my 15yr old, 14yr old, 8yr old and 5yr old children have supported my long days of work and nights of studying and our caregivers have been understanding and flexible.  So many blessings!

It is just about a year later and my journey as a high school teacher librarian and graduate student has been exhausting, rewarding, challenging, educational, fun, humbling, fantastic and at times there are no words!   I love my students, I love my library, I love my school district mentors and school administration for being so supportive and I love my job.    It is the best job in the world!

Happy Anniversary to Me!
